Been fascinated with WWII since I saw "Victory as Sea" on the boob tube. (First run 1951-52. 1956 when I first saw it. )

I try to avoid violence, as a general rule....less still revel in it. 2c

I've long been fascinated by the technology of WWII, but less so the history. When I was younger, my college buddies and I would play tank miniatures which naturally led to an interest in how different tracked vehicles compared to one another.

Any other WWII nuts here?
My biological father died of the effects of Agent Orange in the Vietnam War, and I was disabled as a result.
That said, I am a transport enthusiast, planes, cars, boats and more, and particularly the older stuff, so I do like old war documentaries. I'm not really into the combat side of things. In fact, not at all, really. But in my current-day planespotting on YouTube, I sometimes enjoy seeing C-130's, which have been around for a while, go in and out of Kangerlussuaq, Greenland (and occasionally Nuuk when the Danish crown government visits).
So, in short, I have much more connection to Vietnam than WWII or any of the newer wars, but it's all important newsstuff. And the vehicles are cool, especially when they are not blowing things up.
Is this sig thing on?

My brother dropped Agent Orange on us, something I found out after I left the area.
BTW, I don't revel in war, I'm of the belief that those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat. YMMV

Absolutely. I'm glad we have the documentaries. And the people restoring old planes and such. We'd be rudderless without history. It would be a bland world, as well.

One of the best musical scores ever written by an American composer.
- “The men the American people admire most extravagantly are the most daring liars; the men they detest most violently are those who try to tell them the truth.” ― H.L. Mencken, 1922

Any other WWII nuts here?
I’ve been interested in specific battles…the strategy and execution of them. Both WWII, because my dad and uncle fought in the Pacific theater, and Vietnam because that war was my generation and I lost several friends and a few that never recovered even though they lived.
I’m also interested in what led up to each war and what it would have taken to avoid them…or were they doomed to happen no matter what. My high school history never dealt with either of them. WWII because it was too recent and Vietnam because it was happening at the time and was a hot topic. So, I never got any instruction in either and it’s been up to me to fill in the questions and answers. It takes a lot of time to do deep digs into either and I’m not good at dedicating the time needed.

I have the "Color Books" online, each country's explanation of why they went to war. Also https://ibiblio.org/hyperwar/Japan/Monos/ has a lot of information on the Sino-Japanese war.
https://ibiblio.org/hyperwar/is a resource for the war as a whole. I got commendations from the US Army, US Navy and US Marine Corps for my work there.
And I was a gunner/aux medic on PBRs on the Mekong.

I'm interested in the history of WWI primarily because it was the Western world's first fledgling exploration of how to resolve a large-scale conflict. That, and the technology offered constraints on battlefield realities much as the technology of the rifle did in the American Civil War.

I have 200+ CD-ROMs of material on WWII. The internet has less that 5% of that. Happily, the USMC, US Army and USN historical sites will have copies when I kick it.

I rank my historical interests as:
1 - Ancient ( mainly Greco-Roman )
2- 18th-19th century ( mainly from the War of the Spanish Succession to Waterloo )
3- WWII ( primarily because the conclusion was forgone)
4- The Age of Discovery
5- Modern History

I saw the above series when I was five. Never wavered from the path it set me on. Seventy years later I'm still on that trail. Archivist now.

I hope we don't kill anymore people against their will. This...never mind.
Sometimes when men get old they just want to kill. Unless they are....Intelligent? Kind? Not militarily indoctrinated?
On the other hand GZ, I've got a lot of respect for you and maybe this is some PTSD military stuff and get well soon.
Maybe atheism doesn't have burden of proof because it's impossible to prove an invisible, silent, utterly undetectable thing doesn't exist.

PTSD? The Psych Dept at Purdue didn't mention that about me. Nor none of my wives.

I've got all the usual obsessions about equipment that would be expected, but by far, my favorite part of ww2 history is letters home.
(particularly how servicemembers would try to fuck with the censors so they could send the 40's equivalent of a dickpic and eggplant emoji)

Yes I am such a nut.
My whole family was of that era.
My dad was in the 4th Marine division.
So was my siblings' father.
Mom met them in Klamath Falls OR while they were rehabbing before discharge after the war.
Bob 1 fathered 3 sisters and a brother, and died from a brain tumor.
Bob 2 got the news, divorced Bill's mom, married my mom and two more sons.
Uncle Al was an Army muleskinner in Italy.

Repeating my fav WWII story: My mother lived near an Italian POW camp in Arkansas. She would take fresh fruits and veg to the fence and trade it for hand-carved wooden salad set and the like. Utiensils were that hard to find during the war.
The fun thing was that the guards in the towers would lean on the rail and ooggle the young lady, completely confident that the Eyetees wouldn't bother her or try to escape.
