Veterans Day, 2024
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/11/us/po...s-day.html

Quote:President Biden urged Americans to take a moment to honor those who serve in the military and their families on Monday, using the backdrop of Arlington National Cemetery to observe Veterans Day one last time as the country’s commander in chief.

“The world is dependent on each of you and all of us, all of you, to keep honoring the women and the men and the families who have borne the battle,” Mr. Biden said. “To keep protecting everything they fought for, to keep striving to heal our nation’s wounds, to keep perfecting our union.”

And Fuckface?

Thanks for your service vets. You did something that I was unwilling (maybe unable) to do. Very admirable.

I have to say, after the American electorate reinstated the guy who called us "losers", this day feels hollow to me now. Nothing against you, @brewerb, because I know you mean well, but those thanks we get now seem to me even more vapid. This last election was the thanks we got.

Trump hasn't sullied everything, including vets. He wants to be either loved or hated, stop letting him win.

You are not holow, you honor your country, your duty to your country ends after your death.

We have grievances Thump for good resons. I thank you again because i learned a bit more. One thing is, never lose faith in your country. I never had faith in god, but i have faith in the Portuguese. You can have faith in the US people. remember that.

The US electorate just showed us what it was worth.....essentially, they aren't worth jack shit.

As far as veterans go....Kipling said it best.

An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!

At least I can say I'm proud of the fact that I didn't vote for the son of a bitch.  Dodgy

This isn't about hating Trump. This is about people who voted in a candidate who has said he wants to do away with our Constitution -- the one every vet swore to uphold and defend -- wishing us a "Happy Veteran's Day."

This isn't about Trump. It's about the electorate that reinstated him in office.

Am I mistaken in thinking that most veterans and active members in the US armed forces voted for Trump and by quite a large margin?

I sure as hell did not vote for the chump.
If you get to thinking you’re a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else’s dog around.

Yes, more than half, no, not by a large margin. And the large majority of pro-Trumpers are over 55 and retired, as opposed to younger and active-duty. This is admittedly from Oct 2020, so vet support for Harris may be lower:

Quote:Older veterans are overwhelmingly backing President Donald Trump in the upcoming election while younger veterans significantly prefer former Vice President Joe Biden as the next commander in chief, according to the results of a recent Military Times poll of veterans.

Altogether, about 52 percent of veterans surveyed said they plan to back Trump (or have already backed him, in early voting) in his reelection campaign this year. About 42 percent said they have voted or plan to vote for Biden instead, with the remainder split between third-party candidates and sitting out the election.

The findings — which overall echo other public polls of veterans' voting preferences — show a stark divide among different age, race and gender groups within the veterans community, even as most share broader views on national security and dissatisfaction with the country’s political environment.

[...]

But unlike the Military Times active-duty poll conducted in August, the veterans poll shows strong support among the veterans population for Trump. The active-duty poll had a slight edge for Biden (41 percent to 37 percent) while the 10-point margin among veterans indicates more decisive support for the president.

Edit: Pew reports vets backed Trump over Harris 61-37, so apparently many of 'em don't take him seriously as a threat to the Constitution we swore to defend.

Hmph.

Perhaps people don't take oaths as seriously as they used to?

The Roman professional soldiers under Sulla were supposed to protect the "Republic."

They didn't.

About six-in-ten registered voters who say they have served
in the US military or military reserves (61%) supported Trump
in the 2024 presidential election, while 37% backed Harris,
according to a Pew Research Center survey.

Veterans’ vote preferences are on par with past elections. In
2020, 60% of veteran validated voters cast their ballot for
Trump, while 39% backed Biden. And in 2016, veterans voted
for Trump over Clinton by a similar margin (61% to 35%).

Overall, 63% of veteran voters identify with or lean toward the
Republican Party, while 35% are Democrats or Democratic leaners.
About seven-in-ten White veterans (72%) identify with or lean
toward the GOP. That compares with just 11% of Black veterans,
who overwhelmingly identify as or lean Democratic (82%).

—I'm guessing that these data are skewed due to the fact that
males tend to identify with Trump more than do women.
And the majority (84.3%) of active military service members
are male, versus 15.7% female.  [Army DCS, G1 (DAPE-PRS)]

This is one veteran who definitely didn't vote for Trump!
