Amazingly, it's possible for white people to recognize a level of privilege and have empathy for those on the downside of an uneven playing field.  Unfortunately some do get mired by hyperbole, get defensive, and let bald self interest reign.

I personally think this is largely due to a failure in education when it comes down to ethics and morality. Notions of social and historical privileges and moral responsibility are confused with notions of moral guilt and punishment. Then again, the Right clearly produces propaganda and political discourses designed to perpetuate and reinforce this confusion. Sadly, it's often easier to tell lies about an idea and value than explain and teach said idea and value.
