French colony since 19th century. Before than it was independent afaik. Not even the Mongols could get control over it. Too hot, too humid (for mongol bows) and not suited for cavalry (jungle).

South Vietnam was a prize for the North. The Cong were ran by the North. Erasing a national identity would be rude, I think.

They were hard to tell apart.

China was always meddling mainly in the northern part as their various dynasties ebbed and flowed.  It's a complicated region to sort out because of local troubles.

The German battle-cruiser SEYDLITZ was seriously damaged when hit by a
torpedo and eight 15" shells—five of which hit below the waterline—and eight
12" shells.    She was badly flooded, with 5,329 tons of water taken on board,
causing a list of 8° to port, although she had a normal turn heeling angle of 9°
at full speed.

From Wiki
Quote:By 22:15, Hipper was finally able to transfer to Moltke, and then ordered his ships to steam at 20 knots (37 km/h) towards the head of the German line. Only Seydlitz and Moltke were in condition to comply; Derfflinger and Von der Tann could make at most 18 knots (33 km/h)...
...while Lützow was in the process of sinking

Quote:At approximately 03:40, she scraped over Horns Reef, her speed having fallen to 7 knots (13 km/h; 8.1 mph). Both of the ship's gyro-compasses had failed, so the light cruiser Pillau was sent to guide the ship home. By 15:30 on 1 June, Seydlitz was in critical condition; the bow was nearly completely submerged, and the only buoyancy that remained in the forward section of the ship was the broadside torpedo room. The ship had been turned around and steamed astern to relieve pressure on the badly strained bulkheads in the flooded bow.
