It has become endemic.  It mutates too fast for us to respond to it effectively.

We end up chasing our tails.

You will not find a reputable virologist who will tell you it's endemic or that we can't respond to it much more effectively.

There's tension of course between costs to the economy and what's best for our health, but even that isn't insurmountable. For example, monkeypox has a much longer quarantine period (4 weeks) then Covid (10 days) but there is no law that says businesses must give you paid leave, which means you'll come to work and infect everyone else. Paid leave would be an expense, but if it was required, guess how much more careful businesses would be to limit spread at work??

But this is the problem, which the article highlights very well. There's no public health leadership, capitulation to individual concerns over society as a whole, confused and conflicting messaging, and a whole lot more.
