You could look at both pandemics from different perspectives.  We have a vaccine, antibiotics for secondary infections, state of the art medication, high tech ventilators and other computerized, space age equipment and even with all that people are STILL dying.   It's possible that the virus that hit in 1918 was not as bad as today's virus.....as viruses go.


There really is no comparison between the two societies.  We also have a far more urbanized population, far older, and far less physically-fit than in 1918.  Life expectancy for men in 1916 was 49.6 and for women 54.3.  In 2018 it was 76.2 for men and 81.2 for women.  Lots of underlying conditions now to go around!
