This week's covid numbers for the US:

Thu Dec 31 3,539 237,055 16 937 42
Fri Jan 01 2,258 224,392 16 931 41
Sat Jan 02 2,078 236,387 16 926 41
Sun Jan 03 1,398 201,374 16 922 40
Mon Jan 04 1,985 190,162 16 917 40
Tue Jan 05 3,499 225,558 15 908 40
Weekly total 18,637 1,549,703 (avg 2,662 deaths/day, 221,386 cases/day)
Record deaths: 3,880 on Dec 30
Record new cases: 254,680 on Dec 18
Note that our frequency is 1 in 40 people currently infected, far worse than the 1 in 50 in the UK, and we're not locked down and quite probably haven't seen much of the new strain's effect yet. So, Astreja ... in our case it's "oh, double crap".
I read today that we're seriously entertaining the same idea as the UK -- giving everyone one shot in preference to giving them two in the recommended time frame. I can't seem to get a fix on the estimated effectiveness of one shot. I've heard everything from 50 to 85%. Nothing like making a cloudy situation even more uncertain. I still think this is a bad idea. Especially for health workers, etc., although I don't know how far up the priority list they are thinking of applying this.
