I just had a quick glance at the RKI (german CDC) website after having a conversation with a friend on phone. Particularly at the death toll and its distribution. From my perspective it is getting more and more clear that this pandemic is affecting the elderly to a very disproportionate degree. I know its a simplification and there are a lot of *unknowns* but i think the known data are not in complete opposition to the *truth* out there.
So here we go:
Total deaths: 22.000
Age group >80: 14500 = 70%
Age group 60-80: 6300 = 27%
--> 97% of all deaths are in the age group of 60+
Case fatality of >80: 13,5%
Case fatality of 60-80: 2%
Disclaimer: I am not saying "fuck the elderly", nor am i trying to marginalize anything here (actually i do not have any clear ideas or suggestions as what exactly to do, and how). The numbers seem to indicate (and i have this view for a couple of weeks now) that above the age of 60 the risk of dying of COVID seems to increase exponentially.
Additionally to vaccinating those first (hoping that side effects arent increasing there too) i would prefer our governments/societies to think of more specific tools to protect them than to put whole countries under curfew or stuff like that.
But firstly, lets hope that vaccination has the desired results.
