They were, however, the first, and privately-funded for development, at that. It's odd seeing you avoiding applause for this private-sector success. Of course hooking into main distribution is what they need to make a buck (or ten!) on their investment. And here you are giving credit to the government for development.
If anything MH should give the german government credit for *donating* 375mio tax Euros to Biontech.
P.S.: Another company from Mainz (coincidence? ), SchottAG announced they are ready to produce up to 2 billion small flasks aka. vaccine containers during next year. Its one of the three major players on the world stage for production of small glass flasks. Schott has invested 350mio€ into upgrading its production capacity in eastern germany.
