The first three weeks on deployment to Desert Storm, we had a rudimentary field kitchen. After getting off a 24-hr shift at 0730, some of us firefighters would go to the chow hall for so-called horsecock and eggs. Might have some SOS on the side. I was a regular for that breakfast hangout only because the alternative was an MRE in the barracks.
I haven't eaten any SPAM at all in the intervening 30 years. It is certainly not a food.
