Look at that last number.  In the whole world, 188.9 deaths per million.  In the US, 478!

I'm not gonna brag about this figure, because it's simply indicative of our State and Federal
governments' early preventative interventions on 21 March.

Deaths per million = 9    (yes, nine)  for Australia.

Yes, the death rate is much lower in places that managed the response to CoVid-19 better.  I wish we in the US were among them.  But since we have an uneducatable and conspiracy-theorist in charge right now we can't get an organized national plan going.  The most horrible interpretation is that the lack of national action is deliberate.  A more charitable interpretation is not much better, being sheer stupidity.  Either way, the US is pretty much screwed until the November election and maybe until the January change of government.

You have to be careful with terms!!

There are two death rates one can define:

#1 deaths/total population
#2 deaths/infected (= case fatality rate)

You are referring to #1, and that high US-number is a result of the staggering total infection rate, wich automatically leads to more total deaths
Regarding #2 the US is rather below average, pointing towards a rather good treatment overall.

Some #2 numbers:
World: 3,9%
US: 3,4%
GER: 4,4%
Italy: 14,4%

Some #1 numbers (per million):
World: 90 (please check your 190. maybe a typo?)
US: 470
GER: 109
Italy: 590
UK: 680
Belgium: 850 (yes, almost 1/1000 Belgians are dead now: 10k/11mio)
