That is probably part of it. Another part is that, I suspect, is that despite our reputation for "rugged individualism" etc, most Texans kowtow to authority, and Abbott's belated declaration that local authorities can put teeth behind the masking requirement (something Abbot refused to allow back in April) means that more folks are doing it to avoid the fines that Travis County has imposed.
Shopping last week, I saw a MAGA cocksucker, hat and all, wearing a mask with "HOAX" writ large across it. I stifled my laughter. At least the bastard is wearing a mask.
