Deaths are a lagging indicator. This isn't the Black Plague. People don't get it in the morning and die at night. Instead they get to linger for a while, sometimes on ventilators which damage their lungs making long-term survival even less likely.
What is really bad is that the median age for new cases is way down meaning that there is every chance that far more people will survive but with lingering damage.
There is an old military adage that says "a wounded man is at least 3 times as much trouble to his own side as a dead man." We are looking at a serious spike in otherwise healthy adults being damaged long-term by this thing.
