I'm just about ready to publicly campaign for dropping all mandatory precautions, letting people choose for themselves.

A lot of the stupid will die, most of the intelligent will live.  I don't see a downside. 

Some of them are children.  Some of them are hospital workers.  Some of them are people caring for the elderly.  I have a good understanding of "survival of the fittest".  But some of those "fittest" are risking their lives in more dangerous situations than most of us.

Did no one notice it was in satire font?

It was a Juvenalian satirical commentary.
But like any satire, there is a core truth.  The root of mankind's most serious problems is overpopulation.
