Trump has put his followers in a bad spot. He is so irredeemably terrible in every dimension he can't be criticized for the teeniest infraction because to do so would be admitting there's something to criticize, and if one thing is admitted to be malign then there's nothing left to resist admitting the totality of his malignancy. So they keep shoring him up, like the hapless crew of the Clarendon in "The Last Voyage" shoring up a bulkhead against the weight of an entire encroaching ocean.
