Coronavirus spreads. But don't panic! (topical thread)

Neither scoffing nor speculation. Compare California with Florida to get an idea of the unholy shitshow that's about to unfold. California was hit a week earlier than Florida but has a similar number of cases and a lower rate of spread because they acted fast. Florida failed to do so and is about to get very, very ugly.

I'm not questioning the numbers. I'm questioning your interpretation.

Quote:You only perceive them as misleading due to your own bias.

And you perceive my critique of your analysis as bias because of yours. Try not being a partisan hack in the face of an epidemic that won't care how you vote.

Quote:FACT:

Quote:On January 19, 2020, a 35-year-old man presented to an urgent care clinic in Snohomish County, Washington, with a 4-day history of cough and subjective fever...

... He disclosed that he had returned to Washington State on January 15 after traveling to visit family in Wuhan, China.

An analysis based solely on the first reported case is superficial. Early cases are easily contained and don't provide an accurate picture of the spread of the epidemic. You can use an arbitrary but reasonably large number of cases to compare community spread once the virus gains a foothold. The 100 case mark is arbitrary but useful.

Washington state has done an exceptional job in keeping this in check with early action. They passed the 100 case mark on March 7th but currently only have 4900 confirmed cases.

By contrast, Florida, which passed the 100 cases mark on March 14th has over 6700 cases, DeSantis will be lucky to merely lose the election for his bungling.

You also have to take into account the much faster spread amongst the denser populations of NY and NJ. That's why NY, which passed the 100 case mark about the same time that Washington did, has so many more cases. It's easier to maintain social distancing outside of densely-packed population centers.
