Who's dead now?

It was not sarcastic. I really did not like Kissinger when I was younger. But age brings some perspective sometimes.

Good gracious…I thought he died years ago!

So did I.  Huh

The great icons of decency are disappearing, which is all natural, except the new icons stand not for decency but regression, chaos, ignorance, sanctimony and pettiness.

Kissinger was far too complex  a personality to be fully encapsulated in a forum post.  He wasn't an angel and he wasn't a devil.  In fact, he reminded me of a movie review I saw one time for "Patton."  That said, as I recall, "the film depicts honestly the fact that Patton was the sort of fascistic general that democracies sometimes need to win wars."

Kissinger may have advised Nixon to turn up the heat or turn down the heat..... but the decision was always Nixon's.

Ryan O'Neal, dead at 82.

He was in one of my favorite films of all time, Barry Lyndon.  What a stunning film.  Really breathtaking.

He was also great in What’s Up, Doc. I prefer to forget Love Story, however.

I first saw him 1973 in Paper Moon, with his daughter, Tatum.  Great film, shot in period B&W by an also young Peter Bogdanovich.  I'm sure he did well in other films but I only remember him for that one and it remains one of my favorites.

Tom Smothers

Of the Smothers Brothers comedy duo, age 86

He played the "slow" brother to his brother's straight man.

The terrible truth of getting old is you reach a point where everybody you've ever known or known about is dead.  Tom's passing just now reminded me of that.

I remember the show so well. Tom was the "smart" one. Dickie was the fool. He played the important part and he was no fool. But it took a great "straight man" to be the subject of Dickie's foolery and Tom was that perfect match. Being the "straight man" requires talent too. I am sad to read that he died, but all of us come to an end. Some deaths mean more to me than others. Tom Smothers had a real talent.

Brian Mulroney, Canada's Prime Minister from 1984 to 1993. He was part of the Progressive-Conservative Party, a rather reasonable sort of conservative and far less dogmatic and vile than the Thatcher, Reagan and Bush sr. He was a pioneer of free trade in the country, but unlike the three others was not a savage when it came to the welfare State and even raised taxes to balance the budget instead of throwing the poor under the bus.

Robert Garrison Brown, age 25, son of Cody and Janelle Brown on that train wreck of a show called "Sister Wives." I've watched it on occasion back when they really were sister wives (now three out of the four wives have divorced Cody.) I'm not sure why they even continue the show. Still, the son took his own life and it is sad that he was not speaking to his father at the end. I'm sure that will cause much more grief than the typical amount surrounding this kind of tragic death..
