The greatest RPG video games ever made
According to fans.

1. Final Fantasy VII (1997)
2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011)
3. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003)
4. Final Fantasy X (2011)
5. Mass Effect 2 (2010)
6. Chrono Trigger (1995)
7. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (2006)
8. Fallout 3 (2008)
9. Final Fantasy VIII (1999)
10. Final Fantasy IX (2000)

I haven't played any in the top ten.
Only after that, do the games I like make it on the list:

12: Dragon Age: Origins (2009)
46: Dragon Age: Inquisition (2014)

I'm also surprised they don't consider the Assassin's Creed series to be RPG, when it clearly is.

I put hundreds of hours into Skyrim. Played it for years. Couldn't stand Fallout 3.
Couldn't get in to the Dragon Age games. Something about the controls was off-putting. Always mean to give them another try.
And I have never tried a Final Fantasy game.

Xenoblade Chronicles is 94th.

People don't know what the hell they are voting on, apparently.

Morrowind.

Because it introduced a completely new system to the world of RPGs. Every later addition to the Elder Scrolls series just built on that foundation.

It was my first rpg game. The hardcore rpgers question Skyrim's inclusion in that category. I don't care about that. I had a lot of fun exploring the game's big map.

Final Fantasy VII is so overrated.

I mean, I get it. It's the game that helped make RPGs mainstream because it was the perfect game at the perfect time, and had a decent plot twist (the first unreliable narrator in any popular console game). But it has aged incredibly poorly.

Skyrim is also overrated. It's fun as a do-just-about-anything sandbox, but there isn't a lot of meat on those bones. There's a lot of busy work one can do, but the main story can be finished in, what, 3-5 hours?

I am happy that Xenogears made the top 100. At least some people have good taste.

I guess I don't really give a shit about the main story of a fantasy game. They're all gonna be pretty similar, aren't they? Formulaic good v. evil where if there is even one shade of grey the story is lauded as a creative masterpiece. Sheesh, that sounded pretentious. I'm just tired of the over hyping of the genre.

It's all about the Thieves' Guild. Just wish that questline was longer. And maybe have competing groups of thieves with different motivations.

Its a kinda Mad Max post WWIII scenario. Has 3 areas, one green, one arid, one barren/lava. 3 factions, which basically give you the same abilities, but with different guises (bazooka, bow, laser rifle). Witty dialogues. Lots of choices to make for or against certain characters. Gfx are awesome once you use the mod to remove fog. As usual you are pretty weak at the start. I liked the pure medieval setup of Gothic and risen more (tho one faction is very much like that). All in all a classic Piranha Bytes game. If u like one, you like em all.

Curious, is it a sandbox style open world? Can I play it forever? Or does it end after main story?

Havent finished yet, but most probably ends after main story, like all other Pirana Byte games. There is TONS of side quests to do for each faction and in each area, so that you can run around for a long time before you may finish the main quest line.

You can also play three times joining each faction and chosing according dialogue options
