The election of the GER president is a very strange thing indeed. Someone needs to watch it and all the fuzz around it, in order to understand. Not only is he powerless (only his moral authority counts, which is related closely to the person and his/her career and character). Even the election itself is a kind of "theatre", with all parties engaged in a tug of war, putting up their own candidates, but when election day comes, the outcome is mostly pretty clear, since agreements will have been made. The election of the president is always a mostly non-partisan thing, a majority having agreed on him before (with the commies and greens being the exception sometimes ) and he will be always non-partisan once in office, no matter which party he originally belongs to. Current one, Steinmeier is a social democrat, former vice chancellor under Merkel and former member of a Merkel admin. He ran against her once and lost, but afaik is still considered to be one of the best social democrats currently. Too bad he has removed himself from the political stage now and was followed by *things* like Nahles who basically brutally murdered her own party with her almost trumpian incompetence.
But i am digressing...
