I see American exceptionalism as a version of the "City on the Hill" mythos which posits that we as a nation are a guiding light for the world, and that our actions are, or should be, beyond reproach for that reason. There's also the national mythos of Rugged Individualism which implies that Americans are themselves unique in the world and a model for the rest of humanity.
