Why do post takes about 10 to 12 seconds to complete? - Dancefortwo - 11-27-2020

I counted the seconds it takes to post a reply and it's around 10-12 seconds.  Sometimes I think I didn't hit the post button correctly and hit it again and then I end up with a double post.  Anyone else have this problem?

RE: Why do post takes about 10 to 12 seconds to complete? - Gawdzilla Sama - 11-27-2020

The post is written to the server, then the server incorporates it into the overall body of work, then the software checks to make sure nothing was corrupted. And finally the admins go for a pint and hope the place doesn't burn down while they're gone.

Yeah.  After a good start I've noticed that lag as well, D42.  Also, the "failure to connect" error is becoming more pronounced but that has happened from time to time so I don't know if it has anything to do with the recent server change.

Yeah I've noticed that too. I posted something recently about a Kangaroo, and I thought why the long pause.

Test (Six seconds to post.)

Probably due to the host overloading their server hardware. Cheap service is cheap for a reason.

Hahahahaaaaa.....! Good one mate.

It can be caused by your internet connection also - the server is long done but the image is not being displayed on your screen yet.

I know, my connection is a carry over from the dark ages.

Oh yeah... the "failure to connect" thing is driving me nuts (to where I dunno?) and
it was just as bad prior to the server changeover. Sometimes I have to refresh the
page—and I'm not kidding—15 or 20 times.

Oftentimes when I hit post, or preview, or reply, I have to refresh to get a response.

And I agree that's what's causing a lot of double posts.     Sad

I sometimes do jokes without the smiley face.
In RL I do all my jokes straight faced.
That's sometimes part of the joke.
I know people get confused sometimes without it but I just view them as casualties of war.
Lazy thinkers don't necessarily deserve to be confused but they certainly don't deserve a good joke. :-)

With speeds like that, you must be FTTP.  I have 400 metres of copper wire
pair to my house from the nearest fibre node.  I'd suck Trump's balls whilst
singing The Star Spangled Banner for a speed anywhere near yours mate!

It's DSL. No cables in these here parts.

I manage though, I do everything others do, even stream. Downloading big games takes forever, I let it run overnight, and I can't do anything online while it downloads. That's about the big drawback.

I could go to satellite, which would be a lot faster, but this way I have unlimited bandwidth for cheap. And satellite is weather dependent, this service just goes out when the land phone lines go down. So, I live with it. Whenever they lay cable, I'll do that. Probably I won't live that long.

Fiber optic network to the router, I believe. AT&T put it in our neighborhood in 2018 IIRC. After decades of uploading huge files at 10 mbps I get smoking hot speeds to download movies. I never see the buffering signs. ROFL2

Just before I joined the Navy in '72, I worked as a clerk at an insurance company. I was using a comptometer. One day the motor died, and calculations were not possible, until the boss brought the hand crank out from his office. Put in the numbers, hit action (add, subtract, etc.) turn the handle one revolution, repeat. Rolleyes

What was your job in the Navy? I'm a retired MMC.

We have the same internet connection we've always had but as soon as the AD server changed I get a 10 second delay.  It's not a big thing though.  I'm in no rush.  Ten seconds isn't a deal breaker.  I'm very computer ignorant so I'm amazed I can converse with people around the world on a magic flat box called a lap top.  It's stunning.

I thought I saw that you went to EN A School. I went to MM A School. I worked LL MM, DAFT watch, throttles (destroyers) and port shaft alley watch (on a carrier) on sea and anchor detail. I was also a phone talker at battle stations on the carrier. I'm sure that I've forgotten some things, as I got out of the Navy in '76. The first destroyer had just come back from a WestPac, and then I was transferred to another destroyer that was a reserve ship. That was sold to the ROK, and I was transferred back to my first ship, which was then made a reserve ship. Then there was some shore duty which ended with my assignment to the carrier...which was in the yards when I boarded. I joined the Navy to see the world, and all I know about that was that we were allowed to pump the bilges overboard if we were more than 50 miles from land, which we did.

Yes. I thought the problem was with my PC, so I ran the disc cleanup program.
