I put it down to him not knowing what xenophobia means.  Seems the most likely explanation with him.

I sincerely think I could dislike him no matter what country he was from!

Yep. I hate most people  immediately. Saves so much time. I sometimes change my mind, as I have here with most.  Deadpan Coffee Drinker

RE: Quotes Taken out of Context 2.0: The Real Deal - abaris - 09-04-2022

I know of two quotes getting entirely different meanings when taken out of context.

First, Plautus with his often quoted Homo hominis lupus est.

But Plautus said something entirely different. He said: lupus est homo homini, non homo, quom qualis sit non novit.

Which means, menkind is a wolf to men, as long as they don't know their nature and/or character.

The other one is, of course Marx, with his often quoted opium of the people. Which is always reduced to Religion is the opium of the people. The original quote was a critical response to Hegel's philosophy and read as follows:

Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.

Again, a totally different meaning when quoted in full.
