So, what's the house like? Have you picked one yet?

Yep, "Northern St. Louis County". If you don't believe me say something rude about the Cardinals. Winking

Our approval was bumped up to $250,000U$D with an option for $50,000 more. The first house I remember living in was rent-free, in exchange for the parents' labor, sharecropping it was called.

Something like this, we think. The real estate market here is hyperactive to the max.

How many square feet are you looking at? New vs previously owned? Yard size? Any other particulars?

Our house market is nuts also. They're still selling above initial asking.

Typical around here for what we're hunting:
4 bed
3.5 bath
2,715 square feet
4,792sqft lot

Good luck, hope you can find what you're looking for. Houses here don't stay on the market long.

I'm always amazed (writing from Massachusetts) at how much more affordable the houses are elsewhere. $250K might get you a two-BR condo around here...

Congratulations.   I've owned a house since 1974 and I've had enough of it.  My son just went to contract on a condo in New York so I know what you mean about the real estate market.

Yeah, the house in that picture is gone already. 2-3 days is not unknown in this market. (This area is later generation, post baby boom and more.) Center St. Louis is trying to regain their mojo, but I don't love the traffic down there.

I was thinking the same thing. Downunder, $250K will only get you a one-BR
apartment in any of our capitol cities. A 4-BR house with 2 bathrooms plus a
double lockup garage will set you back $500K to $1mil+ in the same locales.

According to Zillow, 3-bedroom houses are still generally running between $140,000 and $180,000 on my street.  Of course I can't really recommend our rather run-down town.

Locked a deal for a split level. This one is ours. I'm a first time home buyer, but very skilled at moving.
