Judge strikes down Florida’s law demanding felons pay all court debt before they can vote

Florida passed a ballot initiative allowing all former felons the access to vote after they served their time. In a panic, Republicans worked to find ways to restrict it, passing a law that mandated felons pay their court debts before they are allowed to vote.

Akin to a poll tax, the judge in the case ruled the Florida law unconstitutional.

Frustrated by weeks of protests, a North Carolina lawmaker has lashed out at what he calls “gutless wonders in public office who are bowing down to Black Lives Matter.”
Republican Rep. Larry Pittman of Cabarrus County called protesters “ignorant thugs,” “criminals,” “domestic terrorists” and “vermin.” If they resist and attack police, he said they should “shoot them.”
“This is war,” he wrote on Facebook Monday. “Our people have a right to expect our leaders to be on our side, not surrender to the lawless, godless mob.”

Last week, a pair of Minnesota representatives, Steve Green (R-Fosston) and Matt Grossell (R-Clearbrook), sat down with the Hubbard County Board and launched into a “host of grievances,” according to the Park Rapids Enterprise.

Most of them were about the distribution of federal funds meant to bolster Minnesota through the pandemic (via the CARES act). Then their focus… wandered.

The Republicans touched on the feelings of local law enforcement on  police reform bills being proposed in the Legislature.

Grossell, a former sheriff’s deputy in Clearwater County, has long been an “I’m not from the Twin Cities, but we need more cops in the Twin Cities” kind of guy. It's an interesting stance to take if you’ve ever yelled angrily at police after getting super drunk at the St. Paul Best Western.

Which he has.

But Green one-upped him, claiming Antifa and Muslim organizations plan to “police Minneapolis under Muslim rule." In a further demonstration of his local expertise, Green said some DFL legislators plan to impose eminent domain on businesses destroyed during the George Floyd protests – in so doing, allowing “communism” to “move into Minneapolis and St. Paul.”

Misinformation and conspiracy theories

In April, Kathleen Hall Jamieson of the Annenberg Public Policy Center and Dolores Albarracin of the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign published a peer-reviewed study examining how Americans’ media diets affected their beliefs about the coronavirus.

Administering a nationally representative phone survey with 1,008 respondents, they found that people who got most of their information from mainstream print and broadcast outlets tended to have an accurate assessment of the severity of the pandemic and their risks of infection. But those who relied on conservative sources, such as Fox News and Rush Limbaugh, were more likely to believe in conspiracy theories or unfounded rumors, such as the belief that taking vitamin C could prevent infection, that the Chinese government had created the virus, and that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention exaggerated the pandemic’s threat “to damage the Trump presidency.”

These findings held even after controlling for viewers’ political affiliation, education, gender and age.

The authors pinpoint several examples of misinformation circulating in conservative media. For example, on March 6, Fox medical contributor Marc Siegel stated on Hannity’s popular evening program that “the virus should be compared to the flu. Because at worst, at worst, worst-case scenario it could be the flu.”
