Parasite (Gisaengchung) (2019)
 The Kim family. A dirt poor household of four struggling to make ends meet. A friend of the family tutors the daughter of a wealthy couple. He’s leaving to study abroad and recommends the son Ki-woo to replace him. 
Ki-woo has to fake his credentials, but he gets the job. Once inside, he has an idea. He recommends his sister as a tutor for the little brother of his tutee. 
One scam leads to another. Greed makes people careless. 

 - I can see why this received four Oscars.

Upside: The dirt poor have advanced cellphones. That might seem wrong but it’s a fact in real life. A lot of the beggars I have seen have them. Rich people buy them and then get the new model a few months later, hence the price drops.
Downside: A lack of background. Were the entire family are capable and willing con(wo)men on the drop of a hat, or was this something they had experience with?
Also, if you’re the maid and someone you don’t know shows up in the middle of the night; don’t open the door. Especially under those circumstances.

Darlin' (2019)
A mute, feral teenager is hit by a truck. After recuperating she is sent to a catholic orphanage for young girls, to be used as a publicity stunt. For the lack of a name, they call her Darlin’.
Meanwhile, mommy is on the hunt and she is not happy.
 
 - Ignorant savages teaching a feral child to be civilized. Oh, the irony. 
Not sure whether to call this horror with comedy or comedy with horror. Offspring and The Woman definitely didn't have this goofy streak. 
Not very good. A few laughs for people with a particular sense of humor.

Jojo Rabbit (2019) 
Johannes, known as Jojo, a boy eager to be of service to the Fuhrer. Doing his very best – which isn’t very good – at the yungvolk training weekend. Imagine his distress when he comes home to find a secret hiding place in his house with a terrifying Jewish girl hiding there. But this presents an opportunity. Perhaps he can trick her to find out where the Jew queen lays her eggs…
 
 - ROLF! It’s hard to go wrong mocking Nazis, but this was spectacularly funny.
It’s also a war movie. It’s rare to mix comedy and war and at this level, without one ruining the other.  
 
Harley Quinn – Birds of Prey (2020)
When she breaks up with “Puddin’” Harlequin finds herself without immunity, targeted by all the people who have wanted to kill her for a long time.
Black Mask, one of Gotham's ambitious lunatics, catch her. She’s given an ultimatum. Find a particular diamond or have her face cut off. Luckily for her, she’s not the only woman who has a grievance with him and his crew.
 
 - Explosions, guns, acrobatics, brutal combat with hordes of masked henchmen and craziness; It’s a Gotham Tuesday, with extra grrrrlpower.
Best seen as a post breakup comedy. 

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019)
Mill Valley, Pennsylvania. 1968. Halloween.
A time for three nerds to get revenge on their bullies, make a new friend, visit a haunted house and dare an urban legend to come to life.
 
 - Somewhere between Trick r’ Treat  and Goosebumps.
I might pick this for Halloween in a few years. 
 
Black Christmas (2019)
Winter break for a small group of college women, wrapped up in fighting the misogynist parts of white male culture. Come Christmas day one of their friends goes missing, then another. Suddenly the night is a fight for survival against madmen wearing robes.
 
 - A very different beast from the original 74’ Black Christmas slasher.
Overall, meh. I wasn’t expecting much from what I had read in posts and reviews when it was released.

Grown men roaring on the web that rapist do not mock their victims, rape is not a big deal (unless you are accused of doing it), college students having strong opinions about anything is just wrong, clearly showing bad men to be a small minority of the male population is now “Feme-Nazi propaganda”. (paraphrased)
Cheezus Christmas…
I get that generalized manhating is annoying, but these are college students -  some with boyfriends - in a movie where the antagonist is a woman-hating maniac. If you are a grown man there should be a cap on how deeply you let this offend you.

 
American Mary (2012)
Mar, a medical student aiming to become a surgeon. So broke she works at a strip club to pay the bills. The shady pimp loses his underground doctor and Mary is right thereto patch up the thug. Having gained a reputation, people whose requests are unacceptable to licensed doctors come calling.  
An assault pushes her over the edge into the underground. 

 - Disturbing. More thriller than horror. Very good.

The Visit (2015)
Becca and Tyler are going to visit their grandparents for the first time. One week in an isolated rural farm, shooting a documentary.
Their grandparents are acting very strange sometimes, especially after dark. They are old. It’s probably nothing to worry about. Probably…
 
 - Simple and brilliant.
 
The Wretched (2019) 
Ben, a teenager struggling to deal with his parent’s divorce, is sent to live with his father.
The neighbors hit a deer. They bring the carcass home – meat is meat – and brought something along they had not intended. It slithers out of the deer and into the house.
Ben notices something is off. The kid next door is hiding from his mother. People’s memories are erased. Who is going to believe him?
 
 - Full marks. The Hole meets The Guardian meets Oculus. If not horror movie of the year, definitely horror movie of the month.
A perfect end to the hoard. 
It's been almost two decades since I had nothing on the backburner. What a strange feeling...
