Last night I began watching a Netflix series "Bard Of Blood"
Not entirely sure where it's meant to be set. Somewhere in the Middle East. There seem to be three main sets of protagonists ; some Indians, some Pakistanis and some Taliban, who are portrayed as scary crazy.
First episode, the Taliban had caught this group of four Indian spies (yeah, they were spies) The leader, a heavily bearded and most extreme nut job ,wants to have these four guys publicly beheaded, by two young boys. One looks about 12, the other 9 or 10. The experience is to make men, warriors, of the two children. The two kids are handed what look like machetes, and stand behind the condemned, shaking.
Doesn't happen. At the last minute ,what I think is an Indian double agent gets them a reprieve of one week.
Fortunately, there are subtitles, in English. The viewer is advised in the subtitles every time a character switches languages ,which is up to three times in one conversation. The languages are ; Hindi, Urdu, Pasthtu , English ,and the odd phrase in Arabic, "Allahu Akabar" , that kind of thing . I have no idea why we are told every time a person switches languages. Even a six year old child speaks three languages. --I think I get it ;they are polyglots and clever, we are neither.
Only the main black hats, the Taliban, seem to speak any Arabic. I think it's mean to symbolise something negative, but I'm not sure. (a sly dig at Islam?) I think the show is an Indian production. Hence they [seem to say ] some fairly unflattering things about Pakistan.
In a word: incomprehensible . Managed to watch almost all of episode one. Don't think I'll bother with episode 2.
