Euh, yes it is in the US. It's actually not a big holiday in Mexico itself except in the region where the battle actually took place. it took on a new meaning in the US and the rest of the world mostly in the second half of the 20th century. It's also a good excuse to drink and eat Mexican food which is a noble tradition in my opinion.

The Saint-John the Baptist festival is a now fairly obscure religious holiday in Catholic country that envoyed some popularity in Northern France during the monarchy. Today it's still a feast on the Catholic religious calendar. It's also the national holiday of French Canadians. Holidays aren't fixed into one meaning and tradition.
